Donny van de Beek has thanked his team-mates and fans for the support he's received after withdrawing from Euro 2020 due to injury.

The United midfielder had been set to play an important role for the Netherlands in what would have been his first European Championship.

A groin injury forced the 24-year-old to drop out of the Dutch squad and focus on recovery ahead of the 2021/22 season with Manchester United.

In the aftermath of the news breaking, support was sent in from United and Netherlands team-mates as well as fans.

Donny's Instagram post drew responses from both colleagues and supporters.

Marcus Rashford tweeted: "Sorry mate. Take some time for yourself and keep your head high x."

Van de Beek gave his reaction to the gutting news on Instagram.

He said: As you may have already learned, I unfortunately had to leave the team due to a groin injury. A big disappointment, especially because it would be my first European Championship and unfortunately I can't be there now.

I want to thank you for all the sweet messages I have received, it means a lot to me. I want to wish the players, the staff, and last but not least the fans a great European Championship.

The Netherlands have not called up a replacement for van de Beek, instead choosing to stick with their other midfield options. They play in Group C of Euro 2020 with games against Ukraine, Austria and North Macedonia, all of which will be played at home in Amsterdam.

Van de Beek joins Mason Greenwood in having to miss the European Championship through injury. Both will have the same aim: to recover quickly and start next season in top condition and their best form.

Despite their absence, United have 11 players representing their countries in the competition, which begins on Friday with Turkey v Italy.
