Early team news for Sevilla v United

Tuesday 18 April 2023 10:30

Three of the starting XI that Erik ten Hag selected for Manchester United's 2-2 draw against Sevilla at Old Trafford will definitely miss Thursday's second leg in Spain.

Bruno Fernandes has played in 49 of United's 51 games in all competitions this season, but he will have to sit this one out through suspension, after he was booked in the first half of last week's encounter.

The Reds will also be without arguably our first-choice centre-back pairing.

Lisandro Martinez is out for the season following the metatarsal fracture he suffered in the closing stages of Sevilla's visit, while Raphael Varane will spend a few weeks on the sidelines.

Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire successfully replaced the injured pair in the back four for Sunday's 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

Everything you need to know ahead of our crucial Europa League quarter-final second leg in Andalusia.

The names of Tyrell Malacia and Marcel Sabitzer were added to our lengthening injury list at the weekend, too.

Malacia missed out on Sunday's trip to The City Ground altogether, with a sore knee; in the absence of the Dutchman and also Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot played at left-back and scored the second goal against Forest with 15 minutes to play.

Meanwhile, Sabitzer - who scored both of our goals in the first clash with Sevilla - was pulled from the starting line-up just prior to kick-off as he suffered a problem in the warm-up.

Christian Eriksen replaced the Austrian to make his first start for the club since late January and starred in our victory over Steve Cooper's strugglers.

Eriksen was joined in midfield by Casemiro, one of two players who are one booking away from a one-match ban in the Europa League, the other being Facundo Pellistri.

Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford and Shaw have been out recently and Ten Hag could provide an update on the trio in his press conference at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Wednesday evening - although our travelling squad, released earlier that day, should provide further clues as to who might feature in Spain.

There was an encouraging update from Alejandro Garnacho on Tuesday. The exciting teenage winger has been missing since the 0-0 draw with Southampton in March, but he appears to be making progress with his rehabilitation, with Ten Hag hoping he can play a role in the run-in.

Donny van de Beek, who celebrates his 26th birthday today (Tuesday) was ruled out for the season in January, following knee surgery.

SEVILLA TEAM NEWS

Sevilla will be without right-back Gonzalo Montiel, who was cautioned during the first half at Old Trafford, meaning he must serve a one-match suspension. Former Manchester City man Jesus Navas is the likely replacement, having started Sunday’s crucial 2-0 win over Valencia in La Liga.

Jose Luis Mendilibar made eight changes for that game, although two were enforced as Marcos Acuna and Pape Gueye were serving bans. Gueye is ineligible in the Europa League, as is Tecatito Corona.

Alex Telles was also suspended for the trip to Valencia but the on-loan United full-back is available to play against the Reds. He was an unused substitute in Manchester last week, with Acuna getting the nod on the left side of defence.
