Early team news for Palace encounter

Monday 16 January 2023 16:00

Manchester United's next assignment is a trip to south London to face Crystal Palace on Wednesday night (20:00 GMT kick-off).

The game, which will be shown live on Sky Sports in the UK, has been rearranged after initially being postponed in the wake of The Queen's death last year.

United are in great spirits after the derby victory continued our winning run since domestic football's resumption, following the World Cup, and are boosted by the likely availability of new striker Wout Weghorst. The Netherlands international is hopefully ready to make his debut, now his loan move from Burnley has been finalised.

However, our other January arrival, goalkeeper Jack Butland is ineligible to play, as he is on loan from the Eagles.

Diogo Dalot missed the weekend derby win due to injury and Jadon Sancho was also unavailable, while Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford both had fitness problems on Saturday, even if the latter did persevere and convert Alejandro Ganacho's cross for the memorable winner.

Fred and Casemiro are only one booking away from a suspension that would rule them out of the Arsenal clash on Sunday, as this is our last outing before the yellow-card slate is wiped clean.

Of course, there are a number of options open to Erik ten Hag if he decides to utilise his squad. Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire only came off the bench, as did Garnacho, to contribute with another excellent display of wing-play on the big stage.

Scott McTominay was another substitute used in the derby and he could offer an additional physical presence in the midfield.

Donny van de Beek is a long-term absentee, following knee surgery, but the hope is he can return in pre-season before the 2023/24 campaign gets under way.

PALACE'S TEAM NEWS

Manager Patrick Vieira felt his side did not get the rub of the green in a narrow 1-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, a result that means they have only one win in five outings since the World Cup.

Influential defender Joachim Andersen was withdrawn at Stamford Bridge, reportedly with a calf issue, and may be a doubt for our Selhurst Park clash. Nathan Ferguson and James McArthur look to be definitely ruled out.

"At the moment, it is true that we lost a bit of confidence," admitted Vieira, a fearsome opponent in his Arsenal days. "We don't take our chances and have to keep working on that side.

"When you don't win games, you lose confidence but, on the other side, you tell the players to look at the performances and the performance today was positive."

There were three changes for the all-London affair, with Tyrick Mitchell, Jeffrey Schlupp and Ebere Eze coming into the XI. Teenager David Ozoh was among the substitutes.
