Early team news for FC Copenhagen v United

Monday 06 November 2023 15:00

Erik ten Hag is optimistic about Marcus Rashford’s chances of featuring in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League trip to FC Copenhagen.

Rashford had played in every one of Manchester United’s Premier League fixtures this season until Saturday when, despite travelling to Craven Cottage with the rest of the squad, he was not involved in the 1-0 victory over Fulham.

The England international took a heavy knock to his leg in the last training session before the lunchtime kick-off and, after a late fitness test, it was deemed too risky for him to play.

There is hope though that Rashford can return at the Parken Stadium, where United could potentially move up to second spot in Group A by completing the double over Jacob Neestrup’s men.

Marcus was not in the matchday squad for United's visit to Craven Cottage.

“Unfortunately, today it was too short to play,” Ten Hag said on Saturday, after the final whistle.

“He was not 100 per cent fit, he had some complaints and there was a risk of worsening the injury, but I think he will recover in the coming days so I am hopeful that he can be on board for the game against Copenhagen.”

Victor Lindelof also missed the capital clash, through illness, and we await a further update on our Swedish centre-back, but Raphael Varane returned following a similar issue, helping United see out the game in injury-time.

Casemiro’s name was added to the injury list on Friday, when it emerged the Brazilian will need several weeks to recover from a hamstring problem.

Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw are also sidelined, while Amad has made significant steps in his recovery from a knee injury, working individually on the grass at Carrington.

“We hope that we can play for a couple of games with the same line-up,” was Erik’s view at Craven Cottage on the impact of this season’s injuries.

“That would help the routines and that would help the performance of the team. That would definitely help you into better performances and to get better results.”

The Danes twice came from behind to win 4-2 at Randers on Sunday, with 17-year-old debutant Victor Froholdt scoring the final goal in injury-time as FCK maintained their four-point lead at the top of the table.

“We're not satisfied with the performance, and while it was an even game of football I don't think our win was undeserved,” said an unimpressed Neestrup.

“After all, we created a lot of chances but defensively we were far too weak, both collectively and individually. They ran right through us at the start of both halves. We couldn't play our way out of that at all, and I refuse to believe that we can come out this bad again for two halves.”

Mohamed Elyounoussi missed a third successive match due to an unspecified injury, while Davit Khocholava (knee surgery), Birger Meling (muscle tear) and William Clem (broken foot) are all out for Wednesday’s fixture.
