Early team news for Liverpool v United

Thursday 02 March 2023 16:00

Manchester United will need to check on the availability of Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho ahead of the crunch clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

The England internationals missed the comeback victory over West Ham United in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round and manager Erik ten Hag admitted it would be a case of trying to get them back for Sunday's 16:30 GMT kick-off.

Shaw picked up a knock in the Carabao Cup final triumph against Newcastle United, while Sancho was ill.

Ten Hag told MUTV: "We hope [it's] not too bad, we have to see how it develops until Sunday."

Alejandro Garnacho promoted his claims for a start at Anfield with a Man-of-the-Match display against West Ham, while Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Fred and Marcus Rashford all came off the bench to help the Reds clinch a place in the last eight of the FA Cup.

Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen remain sidelined, while Anthony Martial is being treated carefully ahead of his return.

"I won't give a prospective [time], or an expectation about that," said the boss, when asked about our French forward in midweek.

"Let him do his work, as several times now, he has been back and he drops back too quickly.

"We [have to] give him the time and I hope he is on board but first, in this moment, we are doing really well in this set-up. When he is available, we will have another option, a good option.

"Let's give him the time and we will see when he is back. Then we will be happy because we have a quality option extra for the rest of the season."

Ten Hag's press conference will be shown on ManUtd.com, MUTV and the United App at 12:30 GMT on Friday afternoon.

LIVERPOOL'S TEAM NEWS

Joe Gomez and Naby Keita are doubts for the home side, who have regained domestic form to push again for a top-four spot that was looking beyond them.

Thiago Alcantara and Luis Diaz could still be out and defender Calvin Ramsay is definitely unavailable after a knee operation.

Darwin Nunez was fit enough to play against Wolves, in the 2-0 win on Wednesday, and is expected to lead the line.

More details could emerge from Jurgen Klopp's press conference on Friday morning.
