Early team news: United v Lyon

Sunday 16 July 2023 12:48

Will Manchester United's squad be bolstered for Wednesday's friendly against Lyon following the return to training of our international players?

Those who represented their nations in June reported back at our training ground on Saturday, after their extended breaks, and have already been in the gym and on the grass upon joining our pre-season preparations.

It is unclear as of yet if any of our recent returnees will feature in the 14:00 BST kick-off, which you can watch live on MUTV, although Erik ten Hag has previously suggested that it is unlikely most of them will play a part.

While we wait for more information, we can expect a similar squad to be deployed as the one that overcame Leeds United 2-0, in our opening outing of the summer last week.

New signing Mason Mount made his first appearance for the Reds in that victory in Oslo, while Lisandro Martinez returned from injury and fellow centre-back Raphael Varane captained the starting side.

Midfielder Fred missed the game as a precaution, as his workload is managed, and it remains to be seen if he will get some minutes under the belt in Scotland.

The second half in Norway saw Ten Hag give opportunities to a youthful XI, and it was youngsters Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill who got our decisive goals during that 45 minutes. There could be another chance to shine for several of our Academy prospects this time around too.

Lyon are managed by former Reds defender Laurent Blanc, who will be hoping to see his side build on a 2-1 win over Dutch side De Treffers in their opening pre-season outing on Friday.

Our next opponents have added young midfielder Skelly Alvero to their ranks in the offseason from fellow French outfit Sochaux, while defender Clinton Mata has come in from Club Brugge. The latter played against United in both legs of our 2019/20 Europa League round-of-32 meeting with the Belgian club.

As far as outgoings are concerned, head coach Blanc no longer has the services of several players who have departed since the end of last season, including former Bayern Munich and Manchester City centre-back Jerome Boateng, now-Roma midfielder Houssem Aouar and Moussa Dembele, who was top scorer in three of their last five campaigns.

Former Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette finished at the summit of the club's goal-getting charts in 2022/23, and led the line in Lyon's first match of the summer last week.
