Early team news for Norwich clash

Thursday 09 January 2020 16:59

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need to assess his options for Saturday's Premier League game with Norwich City after a taxing schedule.

The manager will check on his troops after the 3-1 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Manchester City at Tuesday night and look for a reaction at Old Trafford against a Canaries side deep in relegation trouble.

Harry Maguire missed the derby with a hip injury and was being considered a major doubt for the game, according to Ole, who is expected to give an official update on the England centre-back's fitness in Friday morning's press conference.

Harry Maguire was hurt in the Emirates FA Cup tie at Wolves.

Central midfielders Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay remain sidelined but youngster James Garner appeared to come through his return from a spell out in the Under-23s' Premier League 2 encounter with West Ham United on Monday evening, going close to scoring in the closing stages.

Nemanja Matic came off the bench against City and helped United's cause in the second half while Fred has played a lot of football of late.

Angel Gomes was another substitute to get some game-time in the derby and, hopefully, the other player introduced in midweek, Anthony Martial, will be fit enough to start after an illness.

Republic of Ireland Under-21 striker Adam Idah scored a hat-trick in the FA Cup win over Preston North End and will be the obvious replacement if top scorer Teemu Pukki is still not fit from his hamstring and toe injuries.

Keeper Ralf Fahrmann could be available but Timm Klose, Ben Godfrey and Josip Drmic are all long-term absentees for Daniel Farke's side.

Leading marksman Teemu Pukki is a doubt for the visitors on Saturday.
