Early team news for Forest second leg

Monday 30 January 2023 15:00

Manchester United will be looking to complete the job and book a place in the final at Wembley, as we host Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Goals from Marcus Rashford, Wout Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes at The City Ground last Wednesday placed Erik ten Hag's side in a strong position ahead of the return fixture at the Theatre of Dreams.

Forest also lost 3-0 on their last visit to M16, on 27 December, and that's one of 11 straight victories United have recorded at home going back to October.

The latest - Saturday's 3-1 victory over Reading in the Emirates FA Cup - saw Ten Hag's choice to select a strong side vindicated as we comfortably reached the fifth round, although key midfielder Christian Eriksen was injured during the course of the second half and must be a doubt for the Forest game.

Eriksen injury concern for Ten Hag

The boss was asked about Christian's condition after the midfield maestro was substituted during the Reading game.

The Dane was on the receiving end of a late challenge from Royals striker Andy Carroll and had to be withdrawn with what Ten Hag later diagnosed as an ankle injury.

Eriksen was later seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches, and a further update from the manager may be provided during Tuesday's pre-match press conference at noon.

Fans will be eagerly anticipating news on Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw too, with the pair missing that FA Cup tie due to injury and illness respectively.

Diogo Dalot and Anthony Martial have been sidelined recently, while Jadon Sancho is making progress in training as he works towards a first-team return after three months out.

Donny van de Beek will miss the rest of the 2022/23 season following knee surgery.

Despite those concerns, Ten Hag should still have some wiggle room if he wants to rotate the side for the first of our eight February fixtures.

Date confirmed for United v Leeds

The Reds' Premier League home game against Leeds will go ahead as planned, after both clubs avoided FA Cup replays.

Anthony Elanga, Fred, Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and Facundo Pellistri were all introduced from the bench against Paul Ince's side, with several regular starters able to wrap up warm and enjoy the closing stages of the game from the Old Trafford dugouts.

Tom Heaton, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Brandon Williams were unused substitutes at the weekend, while on-loan goalkeeper Jack Butland is still awaiting his first inclusion in a matchday squad since joining from Crystal Palace.

Skipper Harry Maguire is available after being suspended for the first leg.

Morgan Gibbs-White impressed for Steve Cooper's side in the first leg but the former Wolves midfielder will miss this one with an ankle injury.

Forest had a free weekend due to their third-round elimination from the FA Cup, but Jack Colback and Ryan Yates are struggling with illness while Taiwo Awoniyi (groin), Giulian Biancone (knee) and Cheikhou Kouyate (thigh) are still sidelined with long-term injuries.

Dean Henderson is out with a thigh problem, although he is ineligible anyway due to the terms of his loan from United, while Chris Wood is cup-tied.

Forest have been busy in the January transfer window, adding Wood, Gustavo Scarpa and Danilo to their squad, and further additions have been rumoured ahead of Tuesday's deadline, with Cooper confirming that Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is having a medical at the East Midlands club.

Shelvey has played twice for the Magpies during their ongoing Carabao Cup run, so would be unavailable to play on Wednesday should his move be confirmed.
