Early team news for United v Nottingham Forest

Wednesday 23 August 2023 14:00

Manchester United are preparing for Saturday's 15:00 BST kick-off against Nottingham Forest and looking to bounce back from last weekend's defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds will aim to extend a 30-game unbeaten home run in all competitions when taking on Steve Cooper's side, who ran Arsenal close at the Emirates Stadium before beating Sheffield United last Friday night.

There has been a blow in the build-up to the game with midfielder Mason Mount ruled out due to injury and possibly sidelined until after the first international break of the season.

The recent recruit's absence will open up a space in midfield, with Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay among the leading candidates to step in.

One player who could have been an option in the engine room, Kobbie Mainoo, remains absent after he sustained an injury in the pre-season game with Real Madrid. Amad is also unavailable after he was hurt on Tour 2023 while we still await Rasmus Hojlund's debut, following his arrival from Atalanta.

We could get another update on the Denmark international's fitness when Erik ten Hag holds his pre-match press conference on Friday, on the eve of our clash with Forest.

Harry Maguire missed the defeat at Spurs due to a knock, and fellow defender Tyrell Malacia is still definitely out.

Despite Tom Heaton's injury, we had two goalkeepers on the bench in north London, in Dean Henderson and Radek Vitek. Anthony Martial made his first appearance since the win over Fulham on the final day of the 2022/23 Premier League, as a second-half substitute.

FOREST'S TEAM NEWS

The visitors have in-form Taiwo Awoniyi in attack as he goes into the game on the back of eight goals in his last six games in the Premier League, equalling Stan Collymore's club record.

Anthony Elanga could be drafted into the line-up against his former club after impressing since joining the City Ground outfit, but there are a few potential absentees for Cooper to deal with.

Wayne Hennessey, Omar Richards, Felipe and Olaoluwa Aina all look destined to miss out. Centre-forward Chris Wood came off the bench to net the late winner against Sheffield United to press his claims for a place in the starting XI.
