Early team news for Spurs showdown

Thursday 11 January 2024 17:00

Manchester United face Tottenham on Sunday at Old Trafford, with the visitors unable to call upon skipper Son Heung-min.

The influential South Korea forward is representing his country in the Asian Cup in Qatar, so will miss the 16:30 GMT kick-off.

United could also be without some big names, with at least 12 players confirmed as unavailable for Monday night's Emirates FA Cup victory at Wigan Athletic.

Antony (injury), Amad and Christian Eriksen (both ill) were the newest absentees at the DW Stadium.

Eriksen and Luke Shaw, who has been out since the pre-Christmas defeat at West Ham United, are hoping to feature at the weekend. Eriksen, of course, is a former Spurs player.

Harry Maguire has not yet been ruled out, but Mason Mount may have to wait until later in the month for his return.

Experienced duo Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro are back in training at Carrington but will not be rushed into action.

Victor Lindelof is sidelined with a groin problem, Anthony Martial has been ill and Tyrell Malacia has yet to make an appearance this season, following a knee injury.

Sofyan Amrabat is on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Morocco, while confirmation over Andre Onana's situation is expected soon, after he was called up for Cameroon but allowed to play at Wigan.

Hannibal (Tunisia) and Amad (Ivory Coast) are not going to be involved in the tournament.

TOTTENHAM'S TEAM NEWS

Although Spurs have strengthened their squad with the addition of loan signing Timo Werner, the loss of key man Son is an undoubted blow to manager Ange Postecoglou.

Further international call-ups to the Africa Cup of Nations will deprive him of Senegal's Pape Sarr, a scorer in the reverse fixture in August, and Mali midfielder Yves Bissouma (who would have been suspended in any case).

James Maddison is edging closer to a comeback but Cristian Romero, Ben Davies, Ivan Perisic, Alejo Veliz and Manor Solomon are set to miss out.

Eric Dier, who is reportedly set to join Bayern Munich on loan, and Giovani Lo Celso are doubts.

Micky van de Ven, Ryan Sessegnon and Rodrigo Bentancur were all in the squad for the FA Cup win over Burnley last time out.
