Erik ten Hag and Nuno Espirito Santo

Early team news: Forest v United

Monday 26 February 2024 12:00

Erik ten Hag’s press conference to preview Manchester United’s Emirates FA Cup fifth-round tie at Nottingham Forest will be held at midday this Tuesday afternoon.

The Reds are seeking to make it to the last eight of the world's oldest cup competition for a record-breaking 48th time, but Ten Hag will be without several key players for Wednesday evening's clash at The City Ground.

Rasmus Hojlund, who also missed December's Premier League defeat to Forest, is out for the next couple of weeks with a muscle injury, while Luke Shaw is a longer-term concern, as the left-back will be absent for a few months.

Shaw has joined fellow full-backs Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the sidelines, leaving Ten Hag without a recognised left-back. Medanwhile, Lisandro Martinez, Anthony Martial and Mason Mount are on the road to recovery.

Casemiro injury update

Erik ten Hag is asked about the Brazilian's withdrawal after a clash of heads.

Erik could provide an update on another important Red when he sits down in front of the media tomorrow. Casemiro departed the pitch 53 minutes into Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Fulham, after suffering a clash of heads with the Cottagers’ midfielder Harrison Reed.

Ten Hag revealed the 32-year-old would be assessed ahead of the meeting with Forest, a team he scored against in August, at Old Trafford.

“I actually don't know [the issue] but he had to come off. He had to come off so we have to speak with the doctor, and the medical team, to see how he's doing,” said the boss on Saturday.

“He couldn't continue the game. We have all seen that. We had to take him off and, hopefully, he's better by tomorrow.”

If Casemiro is unavailable, Christian Eriksen or Scott McTominay could come into the starting line-up, after both featured for the bulk of the second half at the weekend. Sofyan Amrabat was an unused substitute against Marco Silva’s side, while Toby Collyer was included in a matchday squad for the first time.

The boss has several options on the right side of the attack, after Omari Forson made his full debut there on Saturday.

Amad was introduced for his first Old Trafford appearance since December 2021, while Antony also appeared as a late sub, on his 24th birthday.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST SQUAD NEWS

Forest lost 4-2 at Aston Villa on Saturday, meaning they have won just twice in 10 games since beating United at the end of December.

Nuno Tavares has joined Ola Aina on the sidelines, meaning Harry Toffolo is the only left-back available to Nuno Espirito Santo.

Moussa Niakhate played there for the opening 45 minutes at the weekend, scoring the East Midlanders’ first goal at Villa Park, before moving inside to accommodate Toffolo when he was introduced at the break.

Aina, Willy Boly and Ibrahim Sangare returned injured from Africa Cup of Nations duty, while leading goalscorer Chris Wood is out with a hamstring issue.
