Raphael Varane in training.

Early team news for Southampton v United

Thursday 19 August 2021 14:59

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has some tough decisions to make as he plans his XI for the trip to Southampton on Sunday.

While there must be a temptation to keep an unchanged side after the 5-1 demolition of Leeds United on the opening weekend, there are a number of options now available for the 14:00 BST kick-off on the south coast.

Jadon Sancho came off the bench last time out and is pushing for his first start since his summer switch from Borussia Dortmund.

Another of our close-season captures, France international Raphael Varane, has been training all week after being unveiled at Old Trafford before the Leeds opener.

The classy centre-back could also be in contention for a place, although he was not involved in the friendly with Burnley in midweek.

Jesse Lingard did feature and his goal in the 3-1 win against the Clarets showed he is retaining the form displayed in the earlier friendlies, after now recovering from COVID-19.

Anthony Martial was another of the scorers in the Old Trafford practice match and he is also hoping for a start, although Alex Telles and Marcus Rashford are sidelined.

Dean Henderson is making progress after the effects of COVID-19 while Phil Jones had some first minutes on the pitch on Tuesday as he makes big steps towards recovery from a long-term absence.

SOUTHAMPTON TEAM NEWS

The Saints have lost some key players, such as Ryan Bertrand, Jannik Vestergaard and Danny Ings, over the summer.

Romain Perraud has been signed to help the backline while new striker Adam Armstrong made a goalscoring debut in the opening 3-1 defeat at Everton. Attacking full-back Valentino Livramento made his debut at Goodison Park after arriving from Chelsea and forward Armando Broja has also joined from Stamford Bridge, on loan, although he was not involved.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl may only be without midfielder Will Smallbone for the game.
