Anthony Martial looks on during the Crystal Palace match.

Early team news for Southampton clash

Manchester United will be without Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial for the weekend encounter at Southampton in the Premier League.

Both players were injured during the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last Saturday and will be unavailable for Saturday's 12:30 BST kick-off at St Mary's.

In-form attacker Martial scored twice during his first-ever away appearance as a United player, at the south-coast ground back in 2015.

Left-back Shaw, who has a hamstring problem, will miss out on a reunion with his former club.

Anthony Martial takes a heavy fall during the defeat to Crystal Palace.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should provide an update on the situation ahead of the clash against the Saints in his pre-match press conference, which will be held at the Aon Training Complex on Friday morning.

With an international break upcoming, there will hopefully be no other niggles for the boss to contend with, as the Reds aim to bounce back from the disappointment against Palace.

Diogo Dalot will also miss the trip to St Mary’s Stadium through injury. The boss confirmed before the Crystal Palace match that the Portuguese defender would be in line to return after the upcoming international break.

Long-term absentees Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah remain unavailable for selection, with both players still recovering from knee operations.

Luke Shaw injured his hamstring during last weekend's game.

Southampton come into the game having secured their first three points of the Premier League season with a 2-0 win at Brighton last weekend.

The Saints also progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, beating Fulham 1-0. Nathan Redmond, who assisted Michael Obafemi for the only goal at Craven Cottage, sustained a swollen ankle during the game which, according to boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, places a major question mark over whether he will play against United.

Obafemi also left the field early, but Hasenhuttl suggested the Ireland international was suffering from cramp. Ryan Bertrand, who was ruled out of the Brighton match with an ankle injury and did not feature in south-west London, may also be a doubt.

Nathan Redmond limped off during Southampton's win over Fulham in the Carabao Cup.

The home side look to have an otherwise clean bill of health for the visit of the Reds. New signing Moussa Djenepo could be in line to make his first league start for the Saints after scoring at the Amex Stadium within moments of entering the field as a substitute.
