Early team news for Tottenham trip

Thursday 17 August 2023 16:00

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is preparing his side for our first away game of the new season, at Tottenham on Saturday.

The Reds will be out to make it two wins out of two in the 17:30 BST kick-off in the capital, as we bid to improve on our away record last term.

There was some good news with Dean Henderson and Anthony Martial both fit enough to be on the bench for the opening win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Monday.

Lisandro Martinez was withdrawn at the interval, after picking up a booking, and we await an update from the boss on the centre-back's availability on Friday.

Rasmus Hojlund seems certain to be kept waiting for his debut as he recovers from an injury sustained while with former club Atalanta, although he has posted a message on social media pledging to be available "soon".

Tom Heaton, Tyrell Malacia, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad have all been sidelined, while keeper Matej Kovar left the club this week to join Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Jadon Sancho impressed in his substitute appearance against Wolves and could be pushing for inclusion. The winger scored an outstanding opening goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in last season's 2-2 draw.

Victor Lindelof was Martinez's replacement at half-time, with the Sweden international helping debutant keeper Andre Onana keep a clean sheet to set us up nicely for the second match of 2023/24.

TOTTENHAM'S TEAM NEWS

New boss Ange Postecoglou is awaiting an update on Cristian Romero, who went off with a head injury after scoring in their opener at Brentford. Martinez's Argentina colleague suffered a knock that was being assessed, with Postecoglou saying he will always err on the side of caution with issues of that nature.

With no Harry Kane, following the star striker's sale to Bayern Munich, Richarlison can be expected to lead the line again with new recruit Alejo Veliz viewed more as one for the future. Fraser Forster has had a back injury, with another fresh face, Guglielmo Vicario preferred in goal to Hugo Lloris last time out.

Tanguy Ndombele seems on the brink of a return but there is likely to be no Ryan Sessegnon, Rodrigo Bentancur and Bryan Gil in the Spurs squad.
