Wolves v United: Early team news

Thursday 20 May 2021 15:00

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to rotate his side for Sunday’s final Premier League game of the season, at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Leicester’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Tuesday means the Reds are guaranteed second place in the league and next Wednesday’s UEFA Europa League final with Villarreal in Gdansk looms large.

United will still want to carve out a piece of history by becoming only the third club in English top-flight history to record an unbeaten season away from home, but some changes are likely from the 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Midfielders Scott McTominay and Fred both picked up knocks during the game at Old Trafford, with the former having to be substituted early in the second half.

After the game, Solskjaer seemed optimistic in noting that the pair had plenty of time to recover for the final and that assessment seems to have been echoed by Scott’s international boss Steve Clarke.

“You get a little bit nervous watching the games, hoping none of them get injured,” said Clarke, on the day he named his squad for Euro 2020. “A couple got subbed off on Tuesday, but the good news is nothing serious has happened, but we still have a few games to go.”

Ole may prefer to sit McTominay out of the Wolves game, in which case Nemanja Matic would be a like-for-like replacement.

Other fringe players may be afforded a start, depending on how much of a balance the Norwegian wants to strike between refreshing his side and re-establishing momentum after a run of winless league games.

It remains to be seen whether Daniel James has recovered from the recent injury which has kept him on the sidelines for three weeks. Harry Maguire and Anthony Martial also face races against time to prove their fitness for next Wednesday.

WOLVES NEWS

Supporters of the Black Country side were provided with a welcome update on striker Raul Jimenez on Wednesday.

The Mexican has been unable to play since fracturing his skull in November last year, but club doctor Matt Perry revealed that he would start match-based rehabilitation in July, with a view to returning to first-team action next season.

Wolves have struggled for goals without the former Benfica and Atletico Madrid man, scoring just 35 in 37 games, which is fewer than all but the bottom four teams. Fabio Silva and January loanee Willian Jose have deputised at various times for Jimenez, although Pedro Neto and Ruben Neves are the club’s joint-top league scorers, with five apiece.

Neto, Daniel Podence and Jonny Castro Otto join Jimenez in being out of contention until August at the earliest, while youngster Owen Otasowie is a doubt with a knock.
