Early team news for AC Milan encounter

Tuesday 09 March 2021 14:59

Manchester United have a number of injury doubts ahead of Thursday's Europa League round-of-16 home leg with AC Milan.

The Reds approach the 17.55 GMT kick-off on the back of a brilliant 2-0 win at Manchester City over the weekend, while Milan remain in contention for the Scudetto after victory at Hellas Verona.

The visit of a European superpower is one that will be sorely missed by the fans, who cannot attend the tie due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, and it will present another stern challenge for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men following the elimination of Real Sociedad in the previous round.

Marcus Rashford suffered an ankle injury during the Manchester derby and we await an update from the manager on the extent of the England international's problem when he is on media duties on Wednesday afternoon, around 13:30 GMT.

Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani were all high-profile absentees at the Etihad Stadium, while Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial only played after passing late fitness tests. Juan Mata and Phil Jones have both also been on the injured list.

Dean Henderson is to continue in goal, after playing in both legs against Real Sociedad and the Premier League clashes with Crystal Palace and City, keeping clean sheets in each of them.

Ethan Galbraith was added to the Europa League squad last time around.

MILAN TEAM NEWS

Coach Stefano Pioli had provided a positive update on Zlatan Ibrahimovic but there remain conflicting reports about his possible availability. The latest update seems to suggest the Swede will miss out on a return to Old Trafford but could be back for the second leg.

A 2-0 win over Hellas Verona kept up the pressure on rivals Internazionale at the top of the Serie A table and there is an obvious focus on the league situation, with Napoli up next. However, Sandro Tonali should feature after being left on the bench as a precaution at the Stadio Bentegodi.

There are doubts over Theo Hernandez, Daniel Maldini, Hakan Calhanoglu, Ismael Bennacer, Ante Rebic and Mario Mandzukic, but Diogo Dalot, who is on loan with the Rossoneri from United, is eligible to play.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to speak to club media on Wednesday, ahead of his press conference at 13:30 GMT. You can follow what he says on ManUtd.com, the Official App and MUTV.

Milan are also likely to provide details of their travelling squad for Manchester in advance of the eagerly anticipated encounter.
