Cavani confirms tendon problem

Edinson Cavani has provided more detail on the injury that kept him out of the Manchester derby and prevented a call-up to the Uruguay squad.

The striker was forced to miss Saturday's game with City after scoring in our previous Premier League fixture at Tottenham and coming on as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League last Tuesday.

He has been left out of Uruguay's squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Bolivia as a result. His country are currently fifth in the 10-team qualifying group in South America. The top four nations qualify directly for the finals in Qatar next year, with the fifth-best side securing a place in the inter-confederation play-offs, due to be staged next June.

Speaking to local newspaper El Observador in his homeland, Edi explained: “The issue was like this. Before starting the season, I had discomfort in the tendon.

“It made me spend a couple of weeks out until I began to gain some minutes [on the pitch] in my team. I had to go back to the national team, always with a bit of pain, but with the hope that it would disappear.

“It was improving but, after Tottenham, it started coming back.

“They are difficult injuries,” he admitted. “And I decided to have the treatment so that it does not continue to get worse, and to recover as soon as possible to be fit for my team and the national team.”

The centre-forward will hope to be available again soon, with United's next assignment at Watford on Saturday 20 November. The game at Vicarage Road kicks off at 15:00 GMT and is not being shown live on UK television.
