Edinson Cavani

Cavani's incredible record in finals

Wednesday 26 May 2021 14:46

Edinson Cavani should play in his first cup final for Manchester United when we go up against Villarreal in Gdansk this evening.

The Reds are set to lock horns with the Spanish side and battle it out for Europa League glory at 20:00 BST, in what will be our first final under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Should the boss select Cavani, it will be the Uruguayan’s first-ever appearance in a European final, but our no.7 is no stranger to the big occasion and his numbers certainly back that up.

The boss knows he has decisions to make regarding his XI for the big one with Villarreal.

Having played his part in the route to Gdansk with five goals from four outings in the competition, including a pair of braces in the two semi-finals against Roma, Wednesday’s game could be the 12th final of the forward’s club career.

He comes into the season finale in impressive form too, finding the net nine times in his last 10 outings for United across both domestic and European competitions.

Across his time at previous sides Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain, Cavani has produced an eye-catching record in domestic cup finals, netting 12 times in 11 appearances dating back to 2012.

Our talisman has compiled quite the collection of trophies in those matches too, being successful in all but one of those games, on the way to lifting the Coppa Italia, Coupe de la Ligue (five times) and Coupe de France (four times).

The Uruguayan has also been on the scoresheet in eight of those cup final outings, including four braces, and has gone on to lift the respective silverware at the end of every one of those goalscoring performances.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. says

"Edi’s just grown more and more, and you can see the animal in him when it comes to these games. He’s been sensational. Against Roma, he got us through almost single-handedly."

As well as that, Cavani has started eight of the 11 and has gone without a goal in only one of the matches in which he has featured from the off.

So, here’s to another big-game showing from our no.7 that sets up his first trophy in United red this evening!
