Cavani claims United's May Goal of the Month award

Wednesday 02 June 2021 14:00

Edinson Cavani has won Manchester United’s final Goal of the Month award for 2020/21, after his stunning strike against Fulham in May.

The Uruguayan wowed the 10,000 lucky Reds in attendance at Old Trafford 15 minutes into the clash with the Cottagers, ghosting in behind the visitors’ backline and lofting the ball over goalkeeper and former PSG team-mate Alphonse Areola, into the back of the net.

At 35.2 metres out, it was the longest-range goal scored in the Premier League this season and a truly fitting way to mark the return of fans to the Theatre of Dreams, after 14 months away.

Relive Edi's stunning goal one more time.

While the club’s official Goal of the Season award had been decided only hours earlier, with Bruno Fernandes’s equally-as-impressive effort against Everton taking that honour, Cavani’s magic moment has gone on to receive wider recognition.

It was voted the best goal scored in the top-flight during May and is now therefore in the running for the league’s own annual prize.

And it was the runaway winner in our poll, claiming 78 per cent of the vote. That’s the former PSG man’s third win of the campaign, drawing him level with Bruno.

Cavani also claimed May’s Player of the Month, meaning it’s his second consecutive club awards double.

Well done, Edi: we can’t wait to see more of you in 2021/22!

WHAT THEY SAID

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “How good was Cavani's goal? Oh, top. That was the highlight obviously. What a way to introduce himself to the Stretford End. I know I’ve said it a long time, but we need fans here and they’re going to see him score many goals for us. That was an excellent finish, and the way he works to get his chances as well is exceptional.”

Rio Ferdinand: “Wow…just wow… @ECavaniOfficial fans are back and he treats them to that beautiful goal!!”

Stewart Gardner, MUTV commentator: “Lovely touch that, by Bruno Fernandes. Here’s Cavani. Cavani… he’s gone for the chip! Old Trafford has a new icon: Edinson Cavani. They’ve already decided on the Goal of the Season, they might need a recount now!”

Danny Webber, MUTV pundit: “It was fantastic. And what a start to the game. Great quality, lovely little flick from Bruno, the observation from him to just deft touch all the way through to Cavani. At that point it’s all about the quality that he shows. Sees the keeper off his line, keeper backpedalling and from 40 yards out gets the right weight on it, right accuracy and what a way to score at the Stretford End in front of the fans.”
