United Women's most popular shirt revealed

Friday 23 June 2023 10:00

Ella Toone and Manchester United’s famous no.7 shirt is a match made in heaven.

The lifelong Red understands the importance of our historic jersey and wears it with pride each time she represents our ever-improving women’s team.

‘Toone 7’ has become a regular sight on matchdays and Ella recently featured in an adidas film about the shirt, alongside David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and her childhood idol, Cristiano Ronaldo.

While Ella’s main aim to achieve success on the pitch within Marc Skinner’s team, the adidas campaign was a significant moment in her flourishing career.

It also underlined the importance of female role models for young girls around the world, who could previously only look up to male players – and who couldn’t wear the shirts of their female heroes. Here at United, it's vital that we embrace equity.

CHANGING THE GAME

According to our data, Toone’s no.7 shirt was the top-selling United Women jersey on United Direct in the 2022/23 season, with team-mates Mary Earps, Leah Galton and Katie Zelem not far behind.

In a marker of Ella’s incredible appeal among United fans, her shirt was also the 10th most popular on United Direct out of every male and female player who finished the campaign.

As you may have read on Thursday, Marcus Rashford’s no.10 shirt was the most popular shirt on United Direct, with South American duo Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez second and third.
EMBRACING THE LEGEND

Toone was given the iconic no.7 shirt at the start of United Women’s inaugural season and, as a lifelong Red and Ronaldo fan, it meant the world to her. “I don’t know if they [management] were aware of it, but I remember it was one of the first times we’d all met,” Ella said in her UTD Podcast.

“I think we’d met Casey [Stoney] at Old Trafford, she was talking, there was a few of us in the room and she handed us this – it was like a box – and I opened it and it was a shirt with ‘Toone 7’ on the back.
“So, I just thought: ‘Wow, that’s amazing, number seven!' And then I was like: ‘What does the seven mean, is this my number or what?’ I didn’t think it would be my number and she was like: ‘Yeah, you’re the no.7 for Manchester United.' And obviously for me that was so special.

“Like, growing up, supporting the club, Ronaldo being my favourite player, wearing the no.7 shirt whenever I had a kit.  I don’t know if they knew that it was special for me, but at the time that was unbelievable. And I couldn’t wait to get home to show my mum and dad.”

United’s 2023/24 home kit will be released around the world on Tuesday 27 June.
