Toone's cup-final classic wins Goal of the Season

Saturday 18 May 2024 11:00

Ella Toone's sublime FA Cup-final opener has been voted Manchester United Women's Goal of the Season for 2023/24.

The strike powered our women's team towards its first piece of major silverware, on a memorable day at Wembley where Tottenham Hotspur were defeated 4-0.

Half-time was approaching, and the match still goalless, when Toone's midfield colleague Lisa Naalsund fed her the ball, just inside the Spurs half.

Racing towards the opposition box, Toone assessed what was around her, slowed and shimmied to evade a wayward slide tackle from Tottenham's Eveliina Summanen, and then curved a magnificent shot into the top corner of the goal.

Toone had three other contenders in the 10-goal shortlist for United Women's Goal of the Season award, but this vital effort, in the white-hot heat of a tense cup final, romped to victory in our vote.

"I've been practising a lot," Ella told us after the full-time whistle. "The girls know that I'm practising all the time after training on shots like that, shots from outside of the box and shots that I will take in games.

"It's come to me today and I had a lot of space to drive into. I just hit it and as soon as I hit it, I knew it was going in. What a feeling."
Head coach Marc Skinner described the goal as an instant classic.

"Ella's been working on that all year – we said it after the Leicester game," he enthused. "What an incredible moment for her and her family. She's a massive, massive Man United fan. She's the iconic no.7 and she produces a moment like this... it's dreams, isn't it?

"I told her: just remember it, just feel it. It's an incredible goal."

Remarkably, Toone also took second and third place in our fan poll, too.

The cup-final cracker was the clear and overwhelming choice for supporters, garnering 55 per cent of the vote share, but Ella's strikes against Brighton and Newcastle both took a further eight per cent each.

Another Ella rocket, against Leicester, was close behind on six per cent, while Melvine Malard's goal against Paris-Saint Germain (also six per cent) was the only non-Toone effort in our top five.

Thank you to everyone who voted, and congratulations, Ella!
