Ten Hag: We always have to look for new players

Erik ten Hag has declined to rule out further signings for Manchester United in January, insisting the club has to "go for it" if a suitable situation develops during the current transfer window.

So far this month, Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst have both been added to United's first-team squad. The latter made his debut when he started the midweek game away to Crystal Palace, just five days after completing his temporary move from Championship club Burnley.

Given he is on loan from Palace, Butland was ineligible for that 1-1 draw and the goalkeeper is patiently awaiting his first involvement in a matchday squad.

The United boss was asked about the possibility of further new arrivals, during his press conference to preview Sunday's Premier League game against Arsenal.

“I think as Manchester United you always have to look for solutions,” he replied, in a briefing that was held at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night.

“You always have to look for better and that is what we will do.

“We will be doing our research and if there are opportunities, we have to go for it.”

Ten Hag was also asked whether his options on matchdays could soon be swelled by the return of Jadon Sancho. However, as the manager explained, the England international has only just resumed training with the team again after a period of working separately on his fitness.

“I can’t answer that question,” replied Erik, when quizzed if Sancho could feature on Sunday.

“He’s making the next step, yesterday [Tuesday] was the first time he was in team training.

“Team training is the final [level of] training before a game, so we will extend that in the coming days, the coming week, and then go step by step.”
