Erik: Rashford can build momentum
Erik ten Hag says Marcus Rashford can look to build momentum after the forward opened his account for the 2024/25 season at Southampton on Saturday.
The Reds side won the game comfortably, 3-0, with goals from Matthijs de Ligt, Rashford and a stoppage-time shot from Alejandro Garnacho sealing the Saints’ fate.
With momentum in United’s favour following Onana’s penalty save and De Ligt’s maiden goal for the club, our no.10 split the home side’s defence and expertly defied goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to open his account for the campaign, four minutes before the break.
And the boss felt Marcus deserved his moment in the spotlight after a tough start to the new term.

“[Marcus has] had too much negativity towards him,” said Erik, in his post-match press conference.
“He made two 100 per cent chances in that game [against Liverpool] as well playing very well in other games this season.
“He deserved his goal, he had to work for it and he got the reward.”
Rashford’s confidence grew after his strike and he proved influential in maintaining United’s lead as the game progressed.
The England international took a total of four shots, with three on target during his 73 minutes played, and according to Opta data in our Match Centre, Marcus was the most influential player on the pitch.
“To get on to the score sheet for any striker is so important in a season, then you build momentum, you build belief and that will turn into more goals,” added Ten Hag.
“He has already scored so many goals for Manchester United, and at his age the number of goals is amazing. I’m sure there will be many more.”
