Ten Hag: Onana can continue progress

Sunday 03 March 2024 08:00

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be hoping for another match-winning contribution from Andre Onana in Sunday’s Manchester derby against City.

Our goalkeeper was integral to the Reds’ hard-fought FA Cup victory at Forest in midweek and is expected to appear in the second crosstown clash of his debut season at United later today.

His strong shot-stopping display in Wednesday’s win at The City Ground rounded off a commendable February for the Cameroon international, which included being the fan pick for our Man of the Match award after the 2-1 win at Aston Villa.

Onana will now be looking to make his mark in March, which begins for United with a return to Premier League action, at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

Ahead of the derby, Erik ten Hag was asked about Andre in the second part of his pre-match press conference, where he offered his assessment of the goalkeeper’s first term as a Red to date.

“I think he's doing very well,” the boss said to reporters at Carrington. “If I assess his season so far where I think he's adapted to the Premier League, I think he has very good performances in the Premier League.

“What you see is he's progressing and I think he's doing very well lately, very good performances. So, he has to see this as a base and step up from here.”
The Cameroonian has seven Premier League clean sheets to his name this campaign and, although only one of those has come since the turn of the year, Erik recognises the role Andre has played in a 2024 that has featured just a sole defeat for United – last weekend’s reverse to Fulham.

Ten Hag says his goalkeeper is continuing to show progress, by way of the tough tests that the Reds have had in recent weeks.

Andre Onana’s brilliant stop from West Ham’s Edson Alvarez has been nominated for Save of the Month…

“I think everyone is seeing now how he's a very good goalkeeper, but he needs a challenge,” the manager added.

“And from these challenges he progressed. That is what I see in this moment when I see him keeping across the season.”
