Erik's view on Garner and Hannibal

Erik ten Hag was asked about his plans for young midfielders James Garner and Hannibal in Friday’s press conference, ahead of the game with Aston Villa in Perth.

Garner is yet to appear for United this pre-season due to a slight injury, although he is now back in full training.

Hannibal was an unused substitute for our opening games with Liverpool and Melbourne Victory, but came on after 66 minutes of the win over Crystal Palace at the MCG.

Erik said that he needed more time to work with Garner during training before making a decision on how he utilises him this season, following his impressive loan spell with Nottingham Forest.

He also added that Hannibal had been impressing in training.

"James Garner just integrated in training this week so I haven't seen him, I don't have a full impression, I want to see more and then we will make conclusions and decisions,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“Hannibal plays some minutes now, I think he did quite well in training as well, he makes a good impression."

Several young players have stood out so far on tour, and Ten Hag has taken note of the ability he has in his squad.

But the Dutchman cautioned that it is still early days and that pre-season is different to the major competitions that we’ll experience once the campaign gets underway.

"I think they do well but I also know the standards in the Premier League and European football are high.

“It's always about 'are they ready to take the responsibility, to play, to contribute, are they conscious of those situations?' That is what I have to approve and then I will take my decisions.

“They have potential some of them, it is quite clear."
