Erik ten Hag: We could have hurt Liverpool more

Sunday 17 December 2023 19:45

Erik ten Hag was full of praise for his makeshift XI on Sunday, as United became the first Premier League team to stop Liverpool winning at Anfield in 2023/24.

Given captain Bruno Fernandes was suspended, and November's Player of the Month Harry Maguire was injured, the boss was forced to rejig his midfield and defence.

But all departments of the Reds' starting XI performed obdurately, with the incoming players, Jonny Evans and Kobbie Mainoo, among the most notable figures.

Post-match, the boss spoke to the BBC and gave his thoughts on where United could have been even better, Antony's performance, and the importance of his team's attitude...

Ten Hag: This shows we can be disciplined

Erik ten Hag gives his views on United's defensive structure, our attacking output and the red card at Anfield...

THE PLAYERS WERE BRILLIANT, BUT WE COULD HAVE HURT LIVERPOOL MORE

"How pleased was I with the performance? In a lot of respects, yeah, absolutely. The performances were very good from the side. I think [on] the game plan, the players were brilliant in how they were together and they stuck together, how they were fighting. Maybe the only criticism would be in possession – we could have hurt them more. We get one, two, three passes and we are in. But that was the only thing. We could have scored one of the two big opportunities and even won the game, but I think we defended very well."
WE WERE PASSIONATE AND SPIRITED, BUT ALSO SMART

"You have seen Liverpool and it is an obviously very good team, and a very good attacking team. They have a lot of good movements and you have to defend very disciplined. Big compliment to the team, [because] we did that. The spirit, the passion, the desire, we had [it], and also [we were] smart."

LAST YEAR'S DEFEAT MOTIVATED US

"We knew that beforehand [that last year's defeat at Anfield would be talked about]. But last year we beat them twice and we lost, and it was a big loss. And of course then you will then [try to take] revenge."

Our MUTV studio pundits loved seeing 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo playing so well in midfield on Merseyside...

ANTONY'S DISCIPLINE

"He has a lot more [that he can give], but that [effort] is what you should do every game, and he has to prove that every game. But I think that goes for me, that goes for the whole team: we have to do it every game. We have a good squad, a good team, and we can make something out of this season."

DALOT'S RED CARD?

"Say something about that? I'll leave it. Maybe you [the media] can do it!"
