Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has explained the reasons for Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay being absent for tonight’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Reading.

McTominay was on the bench against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, but did not make an appearance. His last start came against Arsenal in the 3-2 loss at the Emirates Stadium last Sunday.

As for Shaw, he also started in the defeat to the Gunners last weekend, but was missing from the squad that travelled to The City Ground on Wednesday night.

Speaking to MUTV, Ten Hag said that he is hopeful the duo can make a swift return against Forest in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

“Luke is ill and Scott has a small problem,” said Ten Hag.

“We don't want to take risks, so I hope they can be back on Wednesday but I'm not sure.”
