Erik ten Hag explains move for Wout Weghorst

Wout Weghorst is the latest loan addition to the Manchester United squad, following goalkeeper Jack Butland through the doors at Old Trafford this January.

The striker joins the Reds - on a temporary deal from Burnley - with plenty of pedigree in European football and having recently represented the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup.

Following the arrival of Weghorst, made official on Friday evening, United manager Erik ten Hag has explained the reasoning behind bringing him to the club for the rest of the season.

Erik previews his first Old Trafford derby and explains Wout Weghorst's signing in this matchday interview...

“He is a striker, and we had an open position there to fill in,” said Erik in his exclusive Q&A before today's Manchester derby.

“I think in the balance of the offensive [players], he really fits in. I am really happy, and I don't think we had the type what he is.

“Most importantly, he can score goals from everywhere and he was always a surprise at every club, in every league. That is also what I expect here.

“For here, I expect a team player and someone who can link up, a player who will do his defending work and we are really happy to sign him.''

Weghorst is not eligible to make his debut against City this afternoon, as Ten Hag confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

However, the forward could be available for selection in United’s next fixture; Wednesday’s trip to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
