Ten Hag: The confidence is growing

Wednesday 25 October 2023 00:11

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has insisted confidence is beginning to grow in the camp, following our most recent victory over FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds made it three wins from our last three games, after Harry Maguire's header ensured victory at Old Trafford, with Andre Onana keeping out Jordan Larsson's stoppage-time penalty.

With Manchester City next to come in the Premier League, focus will naturally shifted towards Sunday's clash in M16, as we look to build on our recent momentum.

Erik believes his players are also beginning to see the results on the pitch, which helps with the all-round cohesion.

“Players are stepping up and getting their markers into the season,” Ten Hag said in his post-match press conference.

“From there, they get the belief, as you have seen with Harry Maguire and Andre Onana.

“I think there are others with good performances. If we produce that and go from game to game, we can create something.”
After making two changes to the starting XI following our win over Sheffield United, Erik brought in both Raphael Varane and Sergio Reguilon for the visit of the Danish champions.

The former partnered Maguire in defence as we kept a clean sheet, with Harry also netting his first United goal since February 2022, when he found the net against Leeds United.

Ten Hag shifted praise the way of the England international, insisting his recent showings have certainly impressed.

Harry Maguire speaks to MUTV after his winning goal in our Champions League victory over FC Copenhagen…

“I think so, he is playing more proactive in possession,” added the boss. “Stepping in, passing vertical, defending on the front foot and also stepping in, passing vertical.

“Defending on the front foot, he is also stepping in and playing forward. Very confident in the duels, I think he is dominating.

“Also in the right moments, he is showing his aggression against the opponents. Then, you see he is also rewarded because of his heading.

“I have to say it is a great pass from Christian [Eriksen], but it was a great finish.”
