Ten Hag: Know-how will be key in our second leg

Wednesday 01 February 2023 08:20

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has insisted his players must approach tonight's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest with "know-how".

Arriving back at Old Trafford with a healthy three-goal lead following last week's 3-0 first-leg victory over the Tricky Trees, goals from Marcus Rashford, Wout Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes have placed the Reds in pole position ahead of tonight's clash.

Forest, however, will have nothing to lose in their hopes to turn the tie around, with Ten Hag keen to reiterate his team must do all they can to complete the job and secure our place in next month's Carabao Cup final.

''We have to go into this game with know-how, it’s another cup and we want to go to Wembley,'' began the boss, speaking in his matchday interview with club media.

''It’s a long time ago that Manchester United went to a final, and to win the final - that is our aim. So we have to do everything for it and that means we have to be fully focused, [have] full energy and a top game plan.

''We face a good team, Nottingham Forest, who are having a really good run. We have to be aware of that so it’s up to us.''

It's been an impressive return following the World Cup for United, and Ten Hag's side are unbeaten on home turf since the tournament, with seven straight wins in M16 breeding confidence and a feel-good factor in front of our own fans.

Erik insists he feels a certain ambience around the group, stating he knows just how much a first Wembley final since 2018 would mean to our loyal supporters.

''It’s great and that vibe with the fans is there, and [on Wednesday evening], it has to be there,'' the boss added.

''And not only with the fans, also with us, but we know what we have to do. We have to be professional and ready for this game, so [we need to play on the] front foot.

''That is the mark and has to be our approach, to our players, and then we have to get the job done.''
