Ten Hag: We've learned a lot on tour

Saturday 03 August 2024 04:00

Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by arch-rivals Liverpool in the final game of Tour 2024, presented by Snapdragon, with Erik ten Hag admitting to having 'mixed feelings' after the result.

The Reds created plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the 90 minutes in South Carolina, but were left to rue a lack of ruthlessness due to Liverpool's own clinical finishing.

There were also further injury and illness concerns, with Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, Will Fish and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all forced to leave the field.

But, more positively, the boss told club media that he had learned a lot about his team from the match against the Merseysiders, and indeed the entirety of Tour 2024. Scroll down for Ten Hag's thoughts on the Liverpool game, Harry Amass's progress, and the next steps for his team...

POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES

"There were mixed feelings, I would say. I think I have seen positive bits, but the way we concede goals, we are, of course, not happy with it. Of course, Liverpool are a very good side. They are very aggressive, and they have lots of goalscoring abilities, so they did very well. But the way we conceded, we are not happy with it."

EFFICIENCY THE DIFFERENCE

"As I said, I think there were good bits, and the first goal is always very important. I thought Liverpool played very well, but they were also very efficient."
AMASS HAS MADE BIG STEPS

"I said already the other day: there is a potential, but he [Amass] has to improve. But I think in the last 12 days here in the tour, he has made big steps. He was really tested in defending, and he made a step forward, but there is still a long way to go."

A TRIO OF CONCERNS

"Always, we have to see what's going on, the assessment. With Will Fish, it's an impact injury, but we also had to sub at half-time, Jonny Evans, because he was ill. Victor Lindelof was a precaution. So yeah, there are some injuries, but we have to see how bad it will be."

A WORD FOR THE FANS

"I am really pleased [with the support]. It was enjoyable to play here. The ambience, the fans, the togetherness, it made a brilliant atmosphere, and it was really enjoyable to play in this atmosphere."

WE'VE LEARNED A LOT

"The group and staff, everyone has done a great job. It's always tough at the end of such a tour, but we are really pleased with all the effort they put in. We came together, we worked on our game model, and now we have to fly back and we have to recover, because it's tough. Especially the last days, and then such a tough game at the end, but you learn a lot about your team. Now we have to recover, and then go to prepare the next game, and it is a big game."
