Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford ahead of Man Utd v Everton

Ten Hag explains United XI to face Everton

Friday 06 January 2023 19:00

Erik ten Hag has named his Manchester United starting XI to face Everton this evening, making four changes to the side who beat Bournemouth earlier this week.

A start for David De Gea secures his place in United's top 10 all-time appearance makers outright, as he plays his 511th game for the Reds tonight.

The boss has opted to rotate his defence from the four who started Tuesday's Premier League win, bringing Raphael Varane back into the starting line-up to partner Luke Shaw who will shift into a central role once again.

Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia get the nod as the two full-backs, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka among the substitutes.

Luke Shaw partners Raphael Varane in central defence.

"He [Shaw] did really well as a centre half," Ten Hag told ITV prior to kick-off.

"Also, Tyrell Malacia did really well. But together with Rapha [Varane] and Diogo [Dalot], [it's a] good back four."

The Dutchman also told club media that the decision to play this back four was a "tactical one".

Ten Hag expressed his wish to see Antony - who is back in the team in place of the injured Donny van de Beek - and Dalot "get that connection back" down the right-hand side.

"But also with Ty and Diogo, we have two full-backs who can come into midfield, who can make overlaps and we need that dynamic in our building up, in our possession game, to play a compact opponent like Everton out of the game."

Antony will play in attack with Anthony Martial, who leads the line, and Marcus Rashford.

Ten Hag wants Antony and Dalot to re-establish their "connection" on the right flank.

Bruno Fernandes will captain the side from his usual attacking midfield role, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen sitting behind him.

Frank Lampard, meanwhile, has made five changes to the Everton side that were beaten 4-1 by Brighton during the week.

Ben Godfrey comes into the starting XI as the Toffees shift to a back five, while Neal Maupay comes in for Dominic Calvert-Lewin up top.
