Ten Hag explains Antony start against Arsenal

Sunday 04 September 2022 15:30

Erik ten Hag has made just one change to his Manchester United line-up for this afternoon's Premier League game against Arsenal (KO 16:30 BST) - and it's a notable one.

New boy Antony is in from the off, replacing Anthony Elanga who started Thursday's win at Leicester City.

Despite joining the Reds just this week, Ten Hag has faith in the Brazilian's ability to wreak havoc among Arsenal's back line.

"He can be a real threat," the boss told MUTV. "On that right wing, with his speed and movement without the ball, but also with his dribbles."

"Also, he is very good at pressing, and I think that that is what we need against Arsenal, who are a good playing football team.

"If you let them play, you have a problem. So, we need to be really good in the pressing, especially [against] the back line of Arsenal.”

Our other deadline-day signing, Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, has also been named in the matchday squad, as one of the substitutes.

Alongside him on the bench is Casemiro, who Ten Hag believes can be an effective change if needed.

"We have a good bench and they can make an impact. They should have that impact because if you want to win something - and winning something in the end is about trophies - then you need a good squad.”

United's formidable back four of Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia retain their places following two successive clean sheets.

Bruno Fernandes will once again have captain duties with Harry Maguire named on the bench.

Sancho, whose goal helped us earn the three points at Leicester, also keeps his place.

Luke Shaw is among the subs after missing our away trip to the Foxes in midweek fellowing a small complaint.

Both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Anthony Martial are still absent from the matchday squad.
