Ten Hag: Mount and Onana are in a good place

Monday 14 August 2023 07:00

Mason Mount and Andre Onana could make their Premier League debuts for Manchester United when the Reds take on Wolves in our season opener this evening (Monday).

Mount became United's first summer signing when joining from Chelsea in early July and has been present ever since the start of pre-season, while Onana followed the former through the door just over a fortnight on, and was a late addition to our Tour 2023 squad in the United States having completed his move from Inter.

Both have now had a prolonged period getting to know their new surroundings and are settling in nicely according to Erik ten Hag, as we prepare to kick off our campaign under the Old Trafford lights tonight (20:00 BST).

“I think they [Mount and Onana] are in a good place," Erik explained, in an exclusive interview with club media to preview the Wolves game.

“And it's definitely an advantage when Mason was in from the start, [in the] first session [of pre-season] he was there.

“Andre came in, we were just in the USA, came into the team and then the tour.

“So, you are so intense, you live together and then you know each other very quick. So that's a big advantage. They are there.”

The pair have since been joined on our pre-season recruitment list by Denmark international Rasmus Hojlund, after the young striker's transfer from Atalanta was announced last Saturday.

Hojlund has been acclimatising to life in Manchester since, although he's yet to train with Mount, Onana and the rest of his new team-mates at Carrington, as he builds his way up to speed having picked up a small issue before making the switch from his former club.

Encouragingly, the 20-year-old has been working out on the grass at our training base, and although the problem will prevent him from being involved against Wolves, Rasmus being at United ahead of the term's kick-off is viewed as another positive by the boss.

“We are also pleased that Rasmus Hojlund, of course, came to us," he added.

“[He] joined in, [he] can now learn his team-mates, the staff around and yeah, I think we are in a good place.

“We had a good foundation from last season and now we have to build on it.”
