Erik ten Hag

What does Ten Hag look for in a player?

Sunday 21 August 2022 07:00

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has outlined what he expects to see from the players he works with at Old Trafford.

So far this summer, the Reds have added Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez to the squad and all three have appeared in each of our opening Premier League games, against Brighton and Brentford.

An agreement is in place with Real Madrid for the transfer of midfielder Casemiro and if that move is completed, he will undoubtedly prove to be a valuable and experienced addition as a busy campaign progresses.

Meanwhile, with 11 days still to go until the closure of the transfer window, the rumour mill continues to run and run.

Ten Hag discusses rivalries, responding to adversity and preparing to face Liverpool...

Ten Hag has regularly been asked about incoming players during his two-month tenure so far, both on the pre-season tour and while back in Manchester.

The Dutchman has tended to respond to journalists by saying we are always looking to strengthen the squad, but only if the right personnel are added.

So, what does the right player look like, in terms of characteristics?

“It starts with the basic stuff,” Ten Hag told us, as part of an exclusive interview ahead of the Liverpool game.

“[You have to be] reliable, have drive, have the motivation – [be] highly motivated.

“You [should] want to fight and you [should] bring it every day on the training pitch. You want to strengthen the squad.

“You are [part of] a unified club, a unified team and, most of, all you are prepared to win.”

Erik’s interview will be available to read and watch in full from Monday morning.
