Ten Hag: My team showed big character

Sunday 12 March 2023 17:17

Erik ten Hag complimented the players' spirit and fitness after his Manchester United team recovered from the shock of Casemiro's first-half dismissal to pick up another Premier League point in the pursuit of a top-four finish.

The manager felt the Reds could have gone on to beat Southampton, despite Casemiro being red-carded in the 34th minute for a challenge on Carlos Alcaraz, and stated his men had a strong claim for a penalty award when Marcus Rashford's low cross appeared to strike the arm of defender Armel Bella-Kotchap.

Ten Hag: We could have won the game

Erik ten Hag gives his verdict on the stalemate with Southampton, Casemiro's red card and more...

PLEASED WITH THE TEAM SPIRIT

"Big compliment to the team, they showed big character. When you are a long time playing with 10 against 11, and we played on Thursday, once again the team is fit physically and mentally. It was a great performance by our lads and we could have won this game."

HANDBALL INCIDENT - WAS IT A PENALTY?

"Oh definitely. There's no doubt. I don't understand why the VAR isn't interrupting because previously they did."
CASEMIRO'S SENDING OFF

"Casemiro has played over 500 games in Europe. He never had a red card. And now, what is it? In [the space of a few] games and 20 games [in total] in the Premier League, he has two red cards."

IMPACT OF THE BRAZILIAN'S ABSENCE

"That is not the issue. We will deal with that. The issue is that this game was influenced by the referee."

RED CARD WAS INCORRECT?

"No, I said what I said. That is the refereeing is influencing the game and we talk about two issues."

APPROACH TO THE NEXT GAME

"We have to settle down. We have four days to the next game, Real Betis, and we'll analyse this game from our own perspective. With 11 players, and with 10. With both, we defended very well.

"We had a good performance today. We should have won this game, we didn't, but we take that point and we carry on."
