Erik ten Hag says Raphael Varane will be assessed in the next 24 hours after the French international left the pitch in tears during Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

The French international went off on the hour mark after stretching awkwardly as he tried to clear the ball before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could get away.

While Varane was able to walk off the pitch with the club physio and doctor, he was crying as he did so signifying the potential severity of the injury.

The Reds pick up a hard-fought point after a dramatic finish at Stamford Bridge.

Ten Hag told reporters after the game: "It is difficult to say how it is now because it is so soon after the game.

"We have to wait 24 hours and then we will know what it is."

He later added in his press conference: “I can understand, we can all probably understand he would be emotional [if he is out of the World Cup], but I think he also has to wait.

"You don’t know [how bad it is]. Of course he is experienced, but [the] medical [staff] have to do their job, have to make the assessment and set the right diagnosis, and then from there on can come a conclusion.”
