Tyrell Malacia

Ten Hag provides update on Malacia

Erik ten Hag has provided a short injury update on Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a solid breakthrough season with the Reds after joining from Feyenoord, making 39 appearances and playing a part in our Carabao Cup success.

However, Malacia was not involved in United’s pre-season campaign, missing out on the tour to the United States and the games around it due to injury.

Tyrell started our final game of the 2022/23 term, completing the full 90 minutes of the 2-1 victory over Fulham which ensured we secured third place in the Premier League table.

He was also included in the Netherlands’ squad for June’s UEFA Nations League finals tournament on home soil, appearing for 15 minutes of the 4-2 defeat to Croatia in the semi-finals.

However, Erik told reporters that the defender is still suffering from an injury sustained last season and that problem is set to rule him out of Monday night’s Premier League opener against Wolves, as well as further matches.

Luke Shaw is the regular left-back, although Diogo Dalot, Brandon Williams and Alvaro Fernandez are also capable of performing there.

New signing Rasmus Hojlund and Dean Henderson are also on the sidelines, but Tyrell’s injury is more comparable to those suffered by Amad and Kobbie Mainoo on tour, according to Erik.

“Malacia's will take some time, the same as Amad and Kobbie, they are really impact injuries,” Ten Hag said in Friday’s press conference.

“All the others, like Henderson and Hojlund, I think they are quite short notice but short notice, what is the definition of it? It will take a few weeks.”

After the Wolves opener, United face Tottenham Hotspur (A), Nottingham Forest (H) and Arsenal (A), before the season takes a two-week break in September for internationals.
