Press conference | Ten Hag's transfers update

Friday 05 August 2022 14:34

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has told journalists the club is working hard on transfers – but also stressed we will only sign players who perfectly match our philosophy.

Ten Hag has welcomed three new signings so far this summer in Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen. And the boss has confirmed all three of them could make their competitive debuts in this Sunday’s Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

United have been heavily linked with central midfielders and strikers all summer after a handful of players in those positions left the club in June. Ten Hag has previously stated he would like to strengthen the group with a long season to come, but that doesn’t mean anyone will do.

Erik is meticulous in his planning and knows exactly what he wants. That extends to his recruitment and the Dutchman underlined that thinking during Friday’s press conference at Carrington.

When quizzed on transfers and if he expected to have more new players by now, Ten Hag told reporters: “That would be a good situation. But I have a squad and I'm happy with the squad.

“The current squad, they make good progress. I'm happy with the signings until now. We just don't need any player, you need the right players and that's the point where we're working all together.”
Asked if he be happy not to sign anybody instead of signing the wrong player, he continued: “If it's not the right player, no. Then I'm happy with the current squad. We need the right players.”

The end of the press conference focused on transfers and Ten Hag refused to be drawn on reported targets, saying: “It's about the right players and there are many but I cannot give comments about a player who is under contract in another club. When we have news, we will bring it.

“You work with the current squad and then you develop players who are in your current squad. In this moment, there are players in that position and they perform really well.”

United v Brighton & Hove Albion kicks off at 14:00 BST on Sunday.
