Ten Hag reacts to dramatic draw against Chelsea

Saturday 22 October 2022 21:20

Erik ten Hag was proud of his team's ability to fight back as Manchester United salvaged a dramatic 1-1 draw with Chelsea in stoppage time at Stamford Bridge.

A 93rd-minute header by Casemiro was enough to cancel out Jorginho's late penalty, ensuring we take a point back to Old Trafford. This leaves Ten Hag's men fifth in the Premier League table, but still just a point behind Chelsea in fourth.

Below, you can check out what the boss had to say after the game in his post-match interviews with various media outlets...

Ten Hag: Casemiro is an example for everyone

Erik says the manner of our equaliser will give us massive energy and belief for the rest of the season...

A DESERVED POINT

“I think it was a good game. In the first half, we dominated the game. But also, that is why the opponent switched their system. And they made it a little more difficult for us, like we saw in the last minutes of the first half. In the second half, I think it was even. It was a battle between two teams of the same height. And in the end, I think a point was justified.

“It was deserved. It was tough, when you get so short for time, you get 1-0 down, I think it is really difficult after the fourth game in 10 days to fight back. But the team found their energy and their strength and fought back. And that’s really big for this team.”

THE CHELSEA PENALTY

“It is what it is and we accept it and we fought back. I have to see. The referee made the decision, we have to accept it and we carry on.”

VARANE UPDATE

“I don’t know, it is so short after we finished the game. We have to wait, no one can say anything about it, and we have to wait a minimum of 24 hours and maybe even longer and get the right diagnosis.”

IMPACT OF THE SUBS

“First of all, it was the fourth game in 10 days, and you can see fatigue in their head or physically. And then we will bring freshness in. And already we make a transfer from the second-half. And straight after the second half, we adapted to their system and I think we did it well.

“Defence, offence, we were not that good on the ball in the second half. We had to bring the switches in and we didn’t find the spare man any more in the midfield, and there were spare men. Especially our full-backs could have done more in those situations.”

CASEMIRO THE HERO

“He is growing from game to game and now, he made the equaliser. And that gives the team and him more confidence. We need headers, and it was a great finish. But he is coming in the team and you see how important he is. I think he was massive today in his performance. He is now matching the Premier League intensity and from game to game he will be better. I am confident of that.”

POSITION IN THE LEAGUE TABLE

“It is quite clear we want to win every game and we want, in this moment, to develop the team. That is what you need and getting in the right position, and we will see where we are when it is March or April. But that is a long road to go. So, for now, I am not looking at the table, I am looking at the process and the progress.”
