Erik ten Hag: Errors cost us

Tuesday 03 October 2023 23:30

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United were punished for our mistakes by Galatasaray during Tuesday's 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds took the lead twice through Rasmus Hojlund, but defensive lapses allowed Wilfried Zaha and then Kerem Akturkoglu to equalise for Okan Buruk's side.

Andre Onana's misplaced pass then led to Casemiro being sent off and giving away a penalty and, although Mauro Icardi missed the spot-kick, he dinked home the winner moments later to leave us without a point in Group A.

Here’s what Erik said to TNT Sports, UEFA and beIN Sports in his post-match interviews at Old Trafford, also touching upon Hojlund's performance and Saturday's meeting with Brentford…

MISTAKES COST US

“I think we were twice up and we were controlling the game. And then, yeah, some errors, some fundamental errors we make [which] we normally wouldn't have in the game. And you can't allow them in this level. You get punished for it. It’s difficult to control, but we are all together, in this. It’s not only one making such an error, it's as a team we make such errors, so you don't win the game, which was totally unnecessary because as I said, you are twice up, so you are in control of the game and then you don't expect this outcome.”

WE NEED GREATER CONTROL

“It’s not easy to score goals in this [Champions] League so you have to be more focused and co-operate, so you don’t concede goals so quickly [after scoring]. But it’s also about keeping the ball and keeping control in the game, and we have to improve in that fact.”

HALF-TIME CHANGE WAS TACTICAL

“No, I felt he [Hannibal] played well but I wanted some passing capabilities in the midfield area, that’s why we brought Christian Eriksen in.”

HOJLUND MAKES AN IMPACT

“He played a very good game and he was a threat all the way through. He scored two great goals, so we are happy with that. Of course, finally now you don't win the game. And also you see Rasmus is very disappointed, but he can be really happy with his goals.”

I’LL SPEAK WITH ONANA

“I have to talk with more players, but I also have to talk with Andre of course. I will do and I will back him, because he’s a great goalkeeper.”

OUR CHANCES IN GROUP A

“Everything is open. There are still four games to go and we have a double [game] with Copenhagen. Every game is tough but we know what to do. We know what our demand is there: to stay in this group and to keep our positions open for going through.”

BRENTFORD ARE UP NEXT

“I think, for tonight, we have to settle down and look forward to Saturday, which is most important. We have to go again and have energy. The setback we have, has to be the fuel for Saturday.”
