Ten Hag: We have to make our own luck

Wednesday 20 September 2023 23:15

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag insists his side must 'make our own luck', after suffering defeat in our Champions League Group A opener against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

United were beaten 4-3 by the reigning Bundesliga champions, with Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro (two) on target in a seven-goal thriller, in a game that saw three goals scored in the closing stages.

Beginning our 2023/24 European endeavours with defeat, Erik believes our fortunes will change, but admits both concentration and on-field principles must improve in order to see an upturn in results.

Erik spoke to various different media outlets following the game in Munich, with a selection of his responses available to read down below...

Erik ten Hag delivers his verdict following the Reds' Champions League clash with Bayern Munich...

GOALS BEING CONCEDED
“I wouldn't say it is like this [on it being too easy]. We are in a period, a lot is going against us, but we have to make our own luck. When we can't keep going [like this] and we can't keep consistent in doing the rules and the principles of our game, then you concede goals. But also [it is] telling that we have played three great teams in the last three games [Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion and now Bayern].”

BOUNCING BACK
“Every game is important, every game is huge and, as I just said, we have to make our own luck. No-one is going to help you, you see in the first 25 minutes, you have to score a goal, but if not, stay in that game and don't allow the opponent to score a goal like we did. It is not only about one mistake [by Andre Onana], because also before that, it was too easy for the player [Leroy Sane] to get that shot. You have to be consistent in such a moment and then you will win games.”
A TOUGH RUN
“What you have seen is a very high level. Against Arsenal, Munich, Brighton. All top, top level teams and we are going head to head but they win. And yeah, then the way they win, we have to make our own luck. And that has to do with with absolute determination. And then we make our own luck. You don't get it because no-one will win you anything in football.”

MISTAKES WILL HAPPEN
“The football, on the whole, will always be mistakes and this is one mistake [by Onana]. So we also don't make it bigger than it is. This was not just Andre and then after that, he made, in the second half, great saves for us and he shows his capabilities and abilities and he will bounce back and he is a very important player.”

SUFFER TO IMPROVE
“That's what I mean. You have to suffer sacrifices in such situations and to give everything and to stop it. And only when we get that in, will we go to win games. As you say, I am disappointed because we should stay in the game. When you score three goals at Bayern, you at least have to take a point.”
