Erik ten Hag was understandably pleased with Manchester United's 2-0 victory at Leeds United.

The boss admitted it was a battle, particularly in the first half, and there were elements of our play that frustrated him, but the opening goal proved vital and it was the perfect example of what he wants to see from his side.

David De Gea was able to keep a clean sheet on his 400th Premier League appearance and the boss paid tribute to the Spaniard's career, while also discussing the incredible form of Marcus Rashford.

Find out what Erik had to say, when interviewed by the official broadcasters after the match, including MUTV...

Ten Hag: We were ready for the battle

Erik praises Rashford, Maguire and Garnacho, plus our fitness and spirit, after the hard-fought win at Leeds...

THE KEY TO VICTORY

"To play football. A long time in the game, we didn't. Our passing accuracy was not that good. I think our players have better skills and they make so many passing mistakes and then you don't get composure in the game. You don't get calmness in the game. We were too hectic to go too quickly for the goal, or the extra pass is played. The moment we did it, the goal, we straight [away] score. With the spaces, we made a great first goal for 1-0. It was, once again, a team goal and about formation, about possession, about the switch of play. It was a great cross from Luke Shaw and a magnificent finish as well."

STRONG STAMINA

"This team is a fit team and we know that. The game is 90 minutes or, if necessary [in cups] 120 minutes, and our team is that fit that it can do that, and withstand that, it can face that, if necessary. So we have seen today to keep calm. It is about the meaning of the first goal. If Bruno [Fernandes] scores the first goal in the first half, it means the game is going to be more easy. But if you don't score, then also you can score in the last minutes of the game. I think also on Wednesday, we come back from [2-0] down. Today, we had to be patient and once you get that first goal you can't make mistakes. On Wednesday, we did, today we didn't. We took the fight, we took the battle, we won a lot of challenges today. So we have a clean sheet and then we will see our players have skills to score goals."

MAGNIFICENT MARCUS

"I was saying to him 'what a strike'. It is what he is aiming for every game. I told him at the start of the season, in every game, you will come into a position to score a goal and you have the capabilities to score. So it's keeping that focus over 90 or 95 minutes. If you do that, you see that he can score with his left, right and his head. He is a great striker, in my perspective. When he makes his good movements, with this team, he will always get some scoring positions and then it is about finishing. He has the capabilities, the physical and technical skills to finish but also the capabilities physical to run there, to move there with the speed. He has athleticism, also to jump, and then it is about mentality keep the focus and the belief that he will score."

VIVA GARNACHO

"Yeah, but that's normal [to improve]. He is a young player he has to learn a lot and we have seen that on Wednesday he was making great action but not finishing. I think he had to finish in those moments and has to do something, once again, focus and the right preparation. Today, it was the same. The first minutes of the game, he was not straight in, but you have to be ready, and after 1-0 he came better in and, then, you see he has great skills with his dribbles, with his pace, with his timing to run in behind and then a great finish."

ANOTHER DE GEA LANDMARK

"A magnificent performance - it tells something about the career, how good that career is. He is still a very fit guy and he's only 32 so he has many years to go."

MAGUIRE'S RETURN

"Yes. But return is the wrong remark, because he played against Reading and he played against Bournemouth. And Harry will keep playing many games, and we need that, because we are the only team in Europe that is playing in four competitions."

A GOOD WEEKEND

"Of course, I'm happy today. When you go to Elland Road and collect three points, you are happy and satisfied. We are all happy, but, especially, I am happy for the fans of Manchester United. That we win this rivalry - I'm still a bit disappointed about Wednesday but you know, in a rivalry, you can sometimes drop points that you don't want but we came back and that gives also energy. Now we win away, I think that will really push us more and it will help us to get through the season and will help in the coming games. The spirit will keep going and now we have to focus on the next game because again, a different league, but a great game."
