Ten Hag: We gave it away in the end

Saturday 27 April 2024 19:34

Erik ten Hag has admitted his frustration with his Manchester United side for conceding another late penalty.

The Reds led through Antony's 79th-minute opener but were undone when a VAR intervention penalised Andre Onana for a mistimed punch, as he connected with Zeki Amdouni rather than the ball.

Clarets substitute Amdouni converted the spot-kick and there was no last-gasp drama at the other end, despite a couple of promising breaks.

Speaking to the official broadcasters afterwards, including MUTV, here is a selection of what the manager had to say...

NOT THE RESULT WE WANTED

"No. Definitely not. Of course, we are disappointed. If, over a long period in the game, when you control and dominate the game, when you create loads of chances and put yourself in a winning position but then give it away in the end."

SO FRUSTRATING

"Ours was a strong start to the game but, in the second part of the first half, we lost control. We came back into the game and had good chances as well but Andre saved us a couple of times. The second half again was all ours, with loads of chances, but you could say, by the end of it, we gave the game away. It's very frustrating. It shouldn't happen. Again, we put ourselves in a winning position, the most difficult [thing] in football, and, in many phases of the game, we did very good. Then, in the end, we have to take three points and keep a clean sheet. But we gave it away. It's very frustrating."

CURRENT MISFORTUNE

"It is bad luck. We are not lucky with the refereeing over the last weeks. So many penalties we've conceded. This one was justified but, on the other hand, I've seen two or three penalty situations. One is 100 per cent a penalty. [Alejandro] Garnacho, I think he was hit and then the last handball is 100 per cent a penalty. If it makes a penalty against Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the [Emirates FA Cup] semi-final, it makes that a penalty. It's really inconsistent. In the last couple of weeks, we gave penalties away or concede penalties and some were very debatable."

WE'RE STILL TO BLAME

"Of course, we have to look in the mirror. We make a mistake for the 1-1. We're very frustrated by ourselves. Also with the referee as well but, first, we do have to look in the mirror."

ANTONY'S DISPLAY

"He was a threat all through. It wasn't a surprise he scored a goal as he also had more chances before that to score a goal. Two or three times, with his runs and good movements in the box. He was there and we are pleased with his performance today."

COULD WE FAIL TO REACH EUROPE?

"I never give negative scenarios. We have two opportunities, one in the Premier League and the other one is we have the FA Cup final. The facts are we can't get fourth position when we're so far behind. Conceding penalties, very debatable, against Chelsea, Liverpool and today again, that is seven points. It's too much, especially at this stage of the season."
