Mixed emotions for Ten Hag after Liverpool draw

Sunday 07 April 2024 19:01

Erik ten Hag has given his verdict on Manchester United's entertaining 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League.

The boss was proud of his players' performance in the second half, rallying to lead the title-chasing Merseysiders courtesy of beautiful goals by Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, after trailing to Luis Diaz's opener.

However, a penalty conceded by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the third spot-kick awarded against the Reds in two games, caused consternation for the manager as Mohamed Salah was given the opportunity from 12 yards to rescue a point for Jurgen Klopp's men in the German manager's final match against United before leaving Anfield in the summer.

Ten Hag: I'm proud of this team

Although he admits mistakes were made, Erik ten Hag wants to point out there was quality shown against Liverpool...

MIXED EMOTIONS

"Maybe you heard or you were in the dressing room but that's what I told the players - mixed emotions. On one side, very disappointed. Again, we give a certain win out of our hands by making, let's say, not a very clever mistake there, like on Thursday and like last Saturday. And we lose seven points in one week, where we should have had nine points. That makes a huge difference. On the other side, I'm very proud of this team and we have young players coming in and then give this performance and can play on this level and it shows the future for Man United is very bright."

REDS SHOWED RESILIENCE

"You saw Liverpool were dominating the game but we stayed in the game. In decisive moments, we were losing duels and losing battles. But then the resilience and the quality, the way we play and the way, in and out of possession, how we organised it and how they played there together. Also the resilience because it was necessary in the first half, when we didn't win the decisive duels and we were hammered. We were bullied by Liverpool. The young players were sometimes even overwhelmed but, then, in the second half, they stepped up and you saw the improvement in the belief and they were convinced we could get a win."

DISALLOWED EARLY GOAL

"We had our moments [in the first half]. We had a very good chance when Alejandro Garnacho was slightly offside. The ball has to come earlier or the timing of Garna has to be a little bit later. Liverpool were dominating, with some chances, but they didn't take their chances and, at half-time, we could repair something with more decisive moments."

LEARNING FROM MISTAKES

"Of course, we needed a moment where we should take advantage of a mistake from Liverpool. Probably, Jurgen Klopp will have said the same that young players, we know that they can make mistakes if they are inexperienced and they need such experience. Our team, our players, the young players, learned from the first half, and stepped up in the second half."

PENALTY CONCESSION

"It was similar on Thursday but, on Thursday, it wasn't a penalty. I wanted to see if it was a penalty but it was the right decision. I can't disagree with that."

The spoils are shared at Old Trafford, despite late chances for yet another comeback win from both sides.

WE WILL KEEP FIGHTING

"I don't know [if the Champions League has gone]. We will keep fighting. We have seen we could, and should, have won all the three games in this week. Brentford was our worst performance, we didn't deserve to win there. But, in the other two games, if you are in a winning position and we deserved, at that moment, to be in the winning position, then you should take the win and that makes the difference. We'll fight for every point and then we will see where we will end up. It's clear we are far behind but we will fight for every point."

WEMBLEY ON THE HORIZON

"We have to step up and be more smart in decisive moments. At corners and free-kicks, stay on your feet also if we want to achieve something this season. It's still positive, we go to the semi-final [against Coventry City]. We keep fighting for every point and will see where we are in the end."
