Ten Hag: It's been a bad start

Saturday 30 September 2023 17:55

Erik ten Hag has said it is simple to see why Manchester United lost at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

The Eagles avenged their Carabao Cup loss in midweek, with Joachim Andersen scoring from a rare attempt on goal, and holding out with the Reds not quite doing enough to get back on level terms.

For Ten Hag, it was clear that the decision making was not good enough in the final third, despite some promising situations in both halves of the game.

Here is a selection of what he had to say to MUTV, Sky Sports and BBC Sport...

Ten Hag: We need to find ways to win

Erik ten Hag knows his side didn't do enough to force a way back into the game, against Palace...

EASY TO SEE WHY WE LOST

"It's actually quite simple. We concede only three chances over the course of the whole game, three from set-plays. Their goal, first of all, the free-kick. You have to be more controlled, it's not necessary to make a foul there. Then the ball is coming into the box and it's not good defending. And we had poor decisions in the final third. We came so often in good positions, behind or in front of their backline, we had three players there in that moment. We didn't have an impact to get to their goal and so whatever, the extra pass, final pass or a shot. The quality was just not good enough in that part of the game. In the final part of the game, we didn't play our best game."

FRUSTRATING IN ATTACK

"Of course it's frustrating. If you are there in the positions when you want to come, in that moment, the form on the day is not there to score a goal. We were, many times, close and then you have to be clinical, concentrated and be sharp. Go for the goal. We have the abilities to score a goal."

OUR PLAYERS CAN DO BETTER

"I think every occasion is different. Sometimes it's like calmness and composure, other times it's be more clinical, other times be more direct. The next time, play the extra pass. As I've said, it's about decision making, the qualities and skillset the players have. There were many occasions, I can't count them, but we are in the position to put the ball where we want to be. I think I repeat myself but we came into the positions and have to make the [correct] decision. Yes, these players can do better. We have more qualities than we showed today."

ANOTHER HARSH LESSON

"Always, we learn from the game. We learn we are to do better in the final part of the game. The first goal is very important, if you concede it, you still have to win. You have to find a way to win and we didn't, so we have to blame ourselves."

FOUR DEFEATS IN THE LEAGUE

"It's a bad start. We have to catch up and do better. This is not good enough. Of course, it's frustrating for everyone, especially the fans. It's frustrating but for us, as well, the players and for me. We have to stay together, fight together and get better and make sure we get improvement."

GALATASARAY NEXT

"We can't change this anymore. Only what we can change is the future and that's Tuesday's game."
