Ten Hag: There is still a lot to come

Wednesday 27 September 2023 00:23

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is thrilled with the way his side performed in the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace, and insists the Reds are on the right track towards success.

United ran out comfortable winners over Roy Hodgson's side, after scoring twice in the first half and adding a second after the break to ensure we began our cup defence in the best possible fashion.

Alejandro Garnacho kept his cool to slot beyond substitute goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, before Casemiro nodded in emphatically from Mason Mount's corner. Within 10 minutes of the second half, Anthony Martial swept home a fine half-volley to wrap up the victory.

Following the match, Ten Hag spoke to MUTV, Sky Sports and to journalists in his post-match press conference, offering his thoughts on what he labelled as 'a good night' for the Reds...

Erik ten Hag heaps praise on Casemiro and expresses his pride in United's performance against Palace...

'WE ARE MOVING FORWARD'

"Oh, it's a good night, as you said. And I think we played quite well and dominated the game. So that was what we were looking for.

"But I also said disappointment and frustration [from the losses]. But the mood is then dropping. The spirit was always good, togetherness was always there and is there. And you could also see that today. And we make a step forward in Burnley, how we defend, how we do that, and togetherness today on the ball and we make another step. So still a lot to come, but we are making [progress] and we are moving forward."

AMRABAT'S FULL DEBUT

"Yeah, but that's why we play him there and I know he's capable. I said before, he is a player [who] if the team needs him, he will play there. And then he gives contribution to the team and that is quality, but also qualities, also then the energy and the dynamic he brings."

MOUNT'S RETURN

“Definitely [we substituted him as a precaution]. Before he's returning from an  injury and we have to build this up. And when we go too quickly, you get the drop. And we want to avoid that. And I think his performance was very good."

CASEMIRO STARS

"You know the qualities of Casemiro and he adds so much to the team in his distribution, but also in his arriving. And now, of course, it's from a corner. And his heading is a threat. But I think on the third goal [he got the] assist."

PLEASED FOR MARTIAL

"[It was a] a brilliant finish and very good that also he gets his goal, that's important [and] will give him confidence. So, very happy and pleased with this performance as well."

GORE EARNED HIS SENIOR BOW

"I think it's a great birthday. But I just said, I'm not a manager and we don't have coaches who give players opportunities. They have to reserve it. And and once they deserve it, they get the opportunity, but then they have to prove it. And I think then called it. But also young players is HannibalPellistri and Garnacho. But they have to do it every time again. And we are very critical. They have to deserve it every day in training. And when the standards are too low, they will hurt from us and we don't play them because they have to train every day to the maximum."

PRAISE FOR ONANA

"Of course, it’s always when you [get a] clean sheet, it will always give the 'keeper confidence, especially when you contribute, when you have some great saves, like on Saturday, when he had that header, it was a very important save there, and now in the end, he had two fantastic saves. So that will help and build his confidence. But he has personality, he deals with situations, with pressure, he can do that and I think he’s starting to do that now."

HOME MATCHES COMING UP

"The mood with us is always good, but of course, when you are not winning, at United, there is disappointment, there is frustration, but the togetherness is always there with us. We know that we are not now in the position where we want to be, yeah. So we have to build up, we have to catch up. Then you have to go from game to game, working on the process and working on the results. We don’t think too far ahead, the next game is the most important, always."
