Ten Hag reacts to thrilling win at Wolves

Thursday 01 February 2024 23:25

Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United's breathless 4-3 win at Wolves was well deserved, but also provided several learning points for his team.

The Reds eventually came out on top in a seven-goal thriller at Molineux on our return to Premier League action on Thursday night.

After twice leading with a two-goal advantage, it looked like we would have to settle for a point after Pedro Neto’s equaliser, only for Kobbie Mainoo’s sensational winner in the 97th minute to deliver a potentially crucial victory.

Read all the key points from the manager's interviews with MUTV and TNT Sports after the game below…

Erik: We're happy in the end

Erik ten Hag has a smile on his face after United's 4-3 win at Wolves, but explains that he has mixed feelings...

A MASSIVE WIN

“It is massive, the win. But this match has a lot of sides. But let's take first the positives. I think we played very good and dictated the game for an hour. We should go up 3-0 or 4-0 but we didn't and then in the end it is quite naïve. The way we conceded goals shouldn't happen but then we showed resilience. Especially Kobbie Mainoo. It was a great goal."

MIXED FEELINGS

“Mixed feelings, but in the end we are happy. Happy for long periods with the performance and the levels we achieved, but if you are dominating the game and you are leading 2-0 and 3-1, you can’t allow to let the opponent to get back – that’s naive and that’s no good. We have to work on that but I’m very pleased with the levels we achieved in the first 60 minutes of the game.”

WE MUST SUSTAIN OUR PERFORMANCE FOR THE FULL MATCH

“Absolutely [we must perform for 90 minutes] but we have to work on that. When we play more often in this formation together, it will come. Also because our players will get in a better fitness status. Some are not there where we want them and that’s normal, because they were a long time injured and they are on their way back. Now they have to go back to 100 per cent match fitness.”

MAINOO MAKING PROGRESS

“He is making incredible progress. He has great abilities, he is the modern midfield player. He can defend and attack but also he has the physicality to do both ways. He is also composed."

A RESILIENT AND DETERMINED SQUAD

“There’s a great spirit in the squad, in this dressing room. We are on the pitch all together and that’s very good to see. You see the determination, you see the resilience of this squad. They are so eager to get the right results and they want to play good football.”

WE SHOULD TAKE MORE RESPONSIBILITY

“Of course we should do better and it was also [the case] early in the season when we totally dominate and then we give it away. We should take more responsibility in such moments and we have so much experience in the team. We should manage that."

RASHFORD’S GOAL A GREAT TEAM MOVE

“Sure [he needed his goal]. But it was a fantastic team goal. We scored more such goals from building up. Many players involved, get it switched and score a great goal. I think what you see consistently is the last games when he has three goals and I think two assists in I think three or four matches."
