Ten Hag: We stick to the plan

Saturday 20 August 2022 07:00

Erik ten Hag's faith in his Manchester United philosophy has not been affected by our two early Premier League defeats to Brighton and Brentford.

United’s start to the campaign has not gone as planned, with consecutive defeats against the aforementioned sides somewhat deflating the optimism that had grown following our positive pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

However, during a recent interview with club media, the Dutchman outlined that he has already seen progress from his side, reaffirming that his plan for United is the right way forward.

Ten Hag discusses rivalries, responding to adversity and preparing to face Liverpool...

“It [has] confirmed my philosophy,” he said. “Now we have obviously [had] a setback, but I know the reasons and we have to work on that.

“We will clear it. But we stick to the philosophy and the plan.”

Ten Hag recalled our pre-season efforts, with the Reds recording three wins and one draw in four matches, including an impressive 4-0 victory over Monday’s opponents.

Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace were also beaten at the MCG, although Aston Villa equalised late on to make it 2-2 in Perth, before a defeat and a draw respectively to Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano on our return to Europe.

Erik was very happy with how things were going up until the Atletico fixture, and although results have taken a turn for the worse since, he sees that as a natural part of the process.

He said: “I’ve seen really good things, until Atletico Madrid.

“After it, it’s a drop. We have to turn that around quickly, but it’s normal in the process. You grow and then you get a drop. But it’s about keeping the right pattern and the pattern going up.”
