Ten Hag reveals team news

Friday 15 September 2023 13:30

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has delivered an update on his squad plans ahead of Saturday's return to Premier League action against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Reds are striving to make it three home wins out of three in 2023/24 but face the threat of the Seagulls, who have started the campaign well, with three victories including a 3-1 beating of Newcastle United last time out.

With the players back at Carrington after the international break, Ten Hag is assessing his options as he selects his side for the 15:00 BST kick-off.

The good news is Lisandro Martinez should be available, despite missing both of Argentina's internationals when travelling to South America, after being forced off during our game at Arsenal.

Raphael Varane and Mason Mount are making good progress but this weekend comes too soon for them.

"Both are in a good place," confirmed Ten Hag. "They are shortly coming [towards] a return."

Victor Lindelof is fine after he was also taken off at the Emirates Stadium.

Antony and Jadon Sancho will not be involved, meaning the right-wing slot is up for grabs. There are a number of potential candidates for that role, including skipper Bruno Fernandes, who comes into the match on the back of consecutive goalscoring outings with Portugal in Euro 2024 qualifiers with Slovakia and Luxembourg.

Marcus Rashford is another who could switch to that position, while Facundo Pellistri is a specialist there but has been away with Uruguay.

Rasmus Hojlund will hope to make his Old Trafford debut but another new signing, Sofyan Amrabat, is still unavailable after he withdrew from Morocco's squad with an injury that should not keep him out too long.

BRIGHTON'S TEAM NEWS

Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi has been dealing with some doubts over the participation of strikers Evan Ferguson and former Reds forward Danny Welbeck. Ferguson missed the Republic of Ireland games during the international break after making a superb start to the campaign, scoring a hat-trick against Newcastle United recently.

However, the young centre-forward trained on Thursday and looks set to feature in the squad. Loan signing from Barcelona, Ansu Fati, is in line to make his debut as another option in attack.

"I want him to enjoy the game and I want to enjoy watching him," said De Zerbi. "He has only had four or five sessions with us so I want to give him as much time as possible. He is a big, big talent. I have worked with him for one week but, if you ask me his best position in one month, I will know. The same applies to Carlos Baleba (the midfielder signed from Lille). He is a great talent."

Paraguay forward Julio Enciso seems set to be out until around mid-November after sustaining a knee injury but fellow South Americans Pervis Estupinan and Facundo Buonanotte are available, as they are "tired after long travel but fine".
